Whether you prefer Bacon Eggs and Cheese or Sausage McMuffins, this imitation Egg McMuffin will not disappoint.

Plus, by making a few small changes, we're going to make our Homemade Egg McMuffin a little healthier than McDonald's.

With slightly fewer calories and a bit more protein, this is a very macro-balanced breakfast that can definitely fit into any diet.

What makes homemade egg McMuffins healthier Recipe

There is absolutely nothing more than a McDonald's Egg McMuffin. In fact, with only 300 calories and 17 grams of protein, it's a solid choice compared to many others.

However, I wanted to improve upon that a bit, so our version is a little lower in calories and higher in protein.

McDonald's uses Canadian bacon in its McMuffins, but we're going to use center-cut bacon here instead. Canadian bacon is very lean, but in my opinion, the flavor isn't close to that of real bacon.

Center-cut bacon is a lean cut of bacon that still crisps up beautifully, so it's always my go-to choice for breakfast dishes.

If you prefer to make Sausage McMuffins, we'll use turkey breakfast sausage to make our own sausage patties for each breakfast sandwich.

For this copycat recipe, we re also going to use light English muffins.

Egg McMuffin

Any regular English muffin will work great, but this lighter version has fewer calories and still holds the same shape, so they make the perfect egg sandwich. However, you can use any type or brand of English muffins you like.

The second change we're making to our Egg McMuffin recipe is to skip the butter. While butter adds flavor, I don't need it to make a delicious Egg McMuffin, so I cut it out of this Homemade Egg McMuffin recipe.

These breakfast sandwiches come together quickly, but the meat of the breakfast will be the most time-consuming part, so I like to take care of that part first.

You can choose to make either the Sausage McMuffin or the Classic Egg McMuffin for this homemade version, so you'll be preparing the breakfast sausage or bacon first.

How to make bacon for an egg McMuffin

For each Egg McMuffin, I use 2 strips of center-cut bacon Since this recipe makes 2 sandwiches, I like to cook 4 strips of bacon in total.

To make crispy bacon, I love to use an air fryer. Place your strips of bacon in the air fryer, and air fry them at 400 degrees F for 7 minutes. Unlike pan frying, when you use an air fryer, you don't even need to flip your bacon.

If you prefer to pan-fry your bacon, you can fry the strips over medium-high heat for a few minutes per side, until cooked to your liking.

And yes, if you prefer Canadian bacon, you can throw a slice directly on your sandwich, but crispy bacon is more preferred here.

To make your own sausage patties, I recommend buying some lean turkey breakfast sausage.

If your store sells pre-made patties, you can go that route, but I don't mind the extra step of making my own sausage patties to fit snugly on top of my English muffins.

I formed this turkey sausage into 6 patties, then pan-fried over medium heat for about 5 minutes per side.

If you use pre-made patties, you can follow these same cooking instructions.

As you can see from this picture, I like to prepare more sausage and bacon than needed for my breakfast sandwiches, that way I can easily throw together more sandwiches throughout the week.

While you're at it, you can even make some Homemade pancakes !

The best way to cook your eggs for McMuffins

If you want a perfectly round egg in your English muffins, you can't just rely on pan-frying.

When you crack an egg in a skillet, it expands considerably; This is where an egg ring will come into play. An egg ring allows you to cook a perfectly round egg within your pan, so I recommend grabbing one if you want to go the scrambled egg way.

If you're in a pinch, you can use the lid ring from a mason jar, or even cookie cutters, to make your own egg ring at home.

Another option (the one I use) is a dash mini skillet. I use this little machine to make fluffy pancakes for my Chicken Biryani Recipe, and it works perfectly for making round eggs, too.

Simply crack an egg into the skillet, close the lid and let it cook. You'll have a fried egg that's nice and round. I like to sprinkle a little salt and pepper over the eggs, just before I pull the eggs off the pan.

You can get a cooked egg using any method of your choice. While frying your eggs will give you the most authentic McDonald's McMuffins, you can also use a poached egg, scrambled egg, poached egg, or any other method of your choice.

Assembling your Egg McMuffin Recipe

You have all the components of this Egg McMuffin recipe, now it's time to put it together!

Divide your English muffin and lightly toast it however you like. I like to spray the insides of muffins with cooking spray, then put them face down in a hot pan to lightly toast. You can also put English muffins in the toaster to keep things simple.

Once you've got your toasted English muffin, you'll place a slice of American cheese on top of the bottom. I use fat-free American cheese because I can't really taste the difference, but any shredded cheese will work here.

If you want the cheese to be super melty, you can just toss the bottom of the English muffins with the cheese slices in the microwave for a few seconds, but this is an optional step.

Lay your cooked sausage patty or crispy bacon on top of the cheese, then add your poached egg.

Top with your other half of English muffins, and you're ready to go!

If you want to save these McMuffins for a later week, I recommend wrapping them in plastic wrap and foil to keep them as fresh as possible. These Egg McMuffins can also be frozen, then quickly reheated in the microwave or air fryer for a quick breakfast any time.

Material

  • 2 light english muffins

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bacon or sausage counting on what type of Egg McMuffin you want to make.   For bacon, i prefer to air fry at 400 degrees F for about 7 minutes. to form Homemade       Turkey Sausage Patties, take a tube of Genie-O Turkey Breakfast Sausage and form it into 6 sausage patties (you won't be using all 6 for this recipe, but it's easiest to form them all at once) . Pan-fry over medium-high heat until cooked through, 5 minutes per side.
  2. Open two English muffins and spray the insides with butter spray. Place them face down within the pan until lightly toasted, then remove from heat.
  3. Make eggs one at a time by either dashing mini griddle (that's what I use) or breaking into a pan. If you would like a perfectly round egg using a pan, use an egg ring or round kitchen utensil to keep the egg rounded (just spray with cooking spray to make sure the egg doesn't stick) Be sure to spray).
  4. Cook the egg to your required level, either fully cooked or allowing the yolk to run slightly. to form an authentic Egg McMuffin, fry the egg completely, then repeat for the second egg.
  5. Add a slice of yank cheese to your English muffins, then top together with your egg. Drizzle bacon or turkey sausage over eggs, then enjoy!

Notes

I use center cut bacon because it's so lean and still crisp. you'll also use turkey bacon if you want.

If you would like the cheese to be nice and melted, you'll add a slice to the bottom of your English muffin and microwave it for a few seconds to melt. But take care as it melts quickly!

His recipe is incredibly forgiving, so be happy to get creative with it. you'll use scrambled eggs, bagels, a special type of cheese, or the other swap you can think of.

O to scale back calories even further, you'll use egg whites instead of whole eggs, but I find that whole eggs have more flavor overall.
